Pullman Regional 2023 Annual Report
Pullman Regional is a community leader in integrated health and healing activities where our values guide and inspire, and science and technology quietly enable people to comfort, encourage, and heal.
A Message from the CEO

2023 was an amazing year! A year that really brought out the best in Pullman as a community and Pullman Regional Hospital as an organization, and one that certainly validated the pride that I have in being afforded the opportunity to work with this great team. Change was a mainstay in 2023, with new leadership, the adoption of a new Electronic Medical Record, and a community kickoff of a major expansion and remodel project among many other mission critical accomplishments.
Through the year Pullman Regional Hospital also experienced significant growth, growing to over 600 employees while building on and living up to key attributes of inclusivity, resiliency and innovation that make Pullman the special place it is known to be. The year saw growth in key relationships, reconfirmed commitments to stroke care, cancer screening, and orthopedic excellence, and recruitment of over 20 physicians and advanced practice providers.
The future is bright in Pullman and at Pullman Regional Hospital and we cannot wait to continue caring for the community and region we know and love.
- Matt Forge, MHA, Chief Executive Officer at Pullman Regional Hospital

The Wexler's Story
Experiencing your first ultrasound and finding out you’re having twins is surprising. Experiencing your second ultrasound and finding out you’re actually having triplets is shocking. Waking up at 1 a.m. to your water breaking at 29 weeks pregnant is terrifying. For Katie Wexler and her husband Fred, that’s what happened; while they didn’t plan to deliver their triplets in Pullman, their babies had a different plan of making history.
More than 20 people assembled in the operating room to assist in the cesarean delivery of the first 29-week gestation delivery ever completed in Pullman.
Primary Care
A primary care physician is your gateway to healthcare! They take care of the whole patient, in contrast to specialists who focus only on one organ system. If a specialist consultation is needed, primary care doctors help patients determine who to see, and they work to ensure coordinated care between physicians. They are the first stop for all healthcare needs and foster long-term relationships with patients and their families. If you ever need a doctor for an illness, injury, or condition, it’s helpful to already have established care with a physician who knows and understands your health history, family history, and current medications (if any).

Taking Care of Down There: Pap Smears
Many women have plates that are overfull, day in and day out. It’s easy to neglect one’s own care when there is so much else to attend to. Yet, preventative measures, like Pap smears, are crucial to protect women’s health, wellness, and longevity.
Dr. Molly Thompson, Family Medicine Physician and Associate Program Director of the WSU Family Medicine Residency Program at Pullman Regional Hospital, shares important information women need to know—specifically in regard to cervical cancer.

Embracing Inclusivity
In recent years, there has been increasing recognition of the importance of providing inclusive healthcare services that cater to the specific needs of LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and/or questioning, intersex, asexual/aromantic/agender) individuals.
"Pullman, with its vibrant, diverse, and student-heavy community, has an opportunity to lead the way in offering healthcare that embraces and supports the LGBTQIA+ population," says Dr. Laura Baker, Primary Care Physician at Pullman Family Medicine.

GI Genius
In 2023, Pullman Regional Hospital implemented a new technology: the GI Genius! This device uses artificial intelligence for pattern recognition during colonoscopies, which improves the performance of colon cancer screenings.
During a colonoscopy, the GI Genius highlights irregularities in the colon and polyps by showing them on the screen in lime green boxes; this helps the physician find and detect polyps since the colon is a cavernous, dynamic sleeve. Through a grant from the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the hospital obtained two Medtronic GI Genius units.
"I feel like the GI Genius has been a good addition to our system and has helped me do a better job!" -Dr. Ben Adkins, Physician at Pullman Family Medicine.
Family Medicine Residency Program
At the heart of healthcare are family medicine physicians. These doctors provide comprehensive health care through all stages of life, developing lasting, caring relationships with patients and their families. There is a critical need for family medicine physicians nationwide. The state of Washington is no exception. In rural areas, such as eastern Washington, it's one of the most difficult fields of medicine to recruit and retain physicians. Washington State University's Elson. S. Floyd College of Medicine and Pullman Regional Hospital are partnering to develop a solution by creating a Family Medicine Residency Program based in Pullman, WA.
Year 1: Family Medicine Residents

Dr. Jeff Ward
Dr. Jeff Ward grew up in Twin Falls, Idaho. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience from Brigham Young University and a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine at William Carey University. He believes connecting with patients is necessary in order to provide optimal patient care. He is passionate about empowering patients to take control of their own healthcare.

Dr. Mohammed Younes
Dr. Mohammed Younes grew up in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Alberta and a Doctor of Medicine at Saba University School of Medicine. He enjoys family medicine because of the ability to grow with patients and work on building long-term physician-patient relationships.

Dr. Bolu Olawuyi
Dr. Bolu Olawuyi grew up in Leduc, Alberta, Canada. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Niagara University and a Doctor of Medicine at Windsor University School of Medicine. Dr. Bolu also holds a Master of Business Administration from Eastern University. He emphasizes preventive and evidence-based practices to ensure positive patient-centered outcomes.
Palouse Pediatrics
Palouse Pediatrics specializes in pediatric care from birth through adolescence. Dr. Michael Frostad, Dr. Methuel Gordon, Dr. Katie Hryniewicz, Dr. Jonathan Lee, Dr. MacKenzie Rinaldi and Dr. Maricarmen Shields see patients at both Palouse Pediatrics locations:

- Moscow location: 1420 S. Blaine St. Suite 5, Moscow, ID 83843

Anxiety in Children
Everybody experiences different fears, worries, and stresses in life; kids are no exception. Children can exhibit stronger fears depending on their age and stages of development. Fears and worries are natural. However, persistent or extreme forms of fear could be due to anxiety. A great example is separation anxiety. Typically, toddlers become upset or distressed about being away from their parent(s), even if they're safe and being cared for.
"Anxiety in children can hold them back from achieving their ultimate potential in life and definitely decreases their quality of life," says Dr. Mike Frostad (Dr. Mike), a pediatrician at Palouse Pediatrics.

Smoke, Smoke, Go Away
With smoke season being a normal occurrence on the Palouse, it's important to learn how to keep children safe and healthy should air quality levels worsen into the late summer.
“Every summer I dread the moment that smoke decides to roll in and stay for a few weeks,” says Dr. Katie Hryniewicz, Pediatrician at Palouse Pediatrics. “And on the Palouse, that likes to coincide with other things like summer grass pollen season and the onset of harvest. Needless to say, if you have asthma, it can be a really bad trifecta!”
Surgery

What happens during a colonoscopy?
Let's be honest, getting a colonoscopy is not on anyone’s “wish list.” Yet, colonoscopies are the best gift you can give yourself to prevent colon cancer—one of the deadliest cancers out there.
Dr. Nancy Panko, Board-Certified General Surgeon and Medical Director of Pullman Surgical Associates, shares important information about the procedure and why it’s such a critical screening tool.
.jpg?width=1492&height=1494&name=CRNA_David_Rees%20(1).jpg)
What happens in the PACU?
Experiencing a surgical procedure and receiving anesthesia medication can cause quite a shock to the body. After surgery, most patients visit the PACU for monitoring and assessment. David Rees, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist with Pullman Anesthesia, breaks down what the PACU is, what happens there, and what patients can expect during their stay.

New Urology Technology
Innovative technologies in the urology field have led to more effective ways to address a wide spectrum of urinary issues. Urologist Dr. John Keizur is embracing these new treatment options to help his patients.
“In urology, we're going to treat anything that has to do with the urinary system and pelvic floor. So, we'll see patients with prostate issues, kidney stones, urinary incontinence, but also a range of cancers of the kidney, bladder, prostate, and testicles. Anything that falls under that umbrella, we're going to take care of,” states Dr. John Keizur, board certified urologist at Palouse Urology Center.
Emergency Medicine

LifeFlight Training
In August, Pullman Regional Hospital Emergency Department staff took part in LifeFlight trainings to practice “hot loads,” where the helicopter does not turn off during a patient transfer. These type of transfers are used for time-sensitive emergencies like strokes, heart attacks, and traumas. It was a beautiful morning learning and practicing with the Life Flight team!

Stroke Awareness
“A quick assessment a family member can do is to use what we call the ‘BE FAST’ assessment,” says Stephanie Knewbow, Registered Nurse and Director of the Emergency Department. It stands for:
Balance: is the person having sudden trouble balancing, standing, or coordinating?
Eyesight changes: is the person experiencing sudden blurred or double vision? Are they experiencing sudden vision loss in one or both of their eyes?
Face: is one side of their face drooping or numb? Ask the person to smile to check.
Arms: can they raise them equally? Does one arm drift downwards?
Speech: can you understand their speech? Is it slurred or difficult to understand?
Time: call 9-1-1, and get the patient to the ER as soon as possible
Orthopedics & Sports Medicine
Inland Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine Clinic has been providing orthopaedic care on the Palouse since 1990. The team consists of four orthopedic surgeons, a sports medicine physician, and a physician assistant that provide both surgical and non-surgical musculoskeletal care to the region.

BEAR Implant
An ACL injury involves a tear or sprain of the tissue that connects your thigh bone to your shinbone. Traditional ACL reconstruction for injuries requires surgery to remove the ACL and a graft to replace the tendon from the patient’s own leg or a deceased donor. Dr. Ed Tingstad, Orthopedic Surgeon at Inland Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine Clinic, is excited to offer a different ACL procedure to patients that doesn’t require a graft: the BEAR Implant.

Team Physicians
Dr. Ed Tingstad and Dr. Kyle Hazelwood, Orthopedic Surgeons, serve as team physicians for Washington State University Athletics and the University of Idaho Athletics respectively.
In this role, they provide immediate on-field medical care and assistance, connect student-athletes to imaging services and surgery when needed, and work on preventative care with athletes before and after games.

Regional High School Athletic Training Program
In the program's first five years, four full-time and one part-time athletic trainers have provided over $1,000,000 in treatments and care to over 750 local student-athletes at no added cost to parents.
This program is funded in part through philanthropy supported through the Pullman Regional Hospital Foundation.

Express Care
Inland Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine Clinic providers have the extensive knowledge and experience to evaluate, diagnose and treat a number of conditions and injuries. Inland Orthopaedic Surgery & Sports Medicine Clinic offers a walk-in Express Care Clinic for orthopedic injuries for patients over 5 years old- no appointment needed. Your insurance card or pre-payment of services is required for all walk-in services.

Total Joint Replacements
Maile Keller, PTA is our Orthopedic Care Coordinator, here to help guide you through the process of your total joint surgery – from start to finish. As soon as your appointment is scheduled, Maile is available to answer any questions you have, remind you of important tips to remember before surgery, help coordinate your post-surgery care options, and so much more. Send Maile an email, or reach her by phone at (509) 336-7598.

Vandal Team Physician
Take a look at what a typical fall Saturday looks like for Dr. Kyle Hazelwood, the team physician for the University of Idaho's athletic program. Beyond his role as a full-time orthopedic surgeon at Inland Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine Clinic, Hazelwood serves in a crucial role for the university's athletes, ensuring their well-being and peak performance.

Inside the OR
Have you ever wondered what happens during a VELYS robotic-assisted knee replacement? The below video is real footage from a knee replacement surgery Dr. Ed Tingstad did with the surgical system.
VELYS provides continuous real-time feedback to the surgeon throughout the procedure using AI technology to guide and correct, resulting in an efficient surgical experience and a long-lasting implant. Dr. Ed Tingstad and Dr. Mat Taylor use the VELYS system for knee replacement patients.
