Pullman Regional Hospital will sponsor the newly named and revised Human and Animal Health track at the Palouse Knowledge Corridor's Be the Entrepreneur Bootcamp, to be held June 14-18 in Pullman, Wash., and Moscow, Idaho.
Hospital CEO Scott Adams hopes the sponsorship will benefit both the hospital and community.
"One of our areas of focus is innovation," Adams said. "We want to play a leadership role in defining what innovation in healthcare looks like and feels like in our region."
Pullman Regional Hospital will moderate a full session at the Bootcamp and will have a speaker during the Business Showcase Luncheon.
The hospital sponsored employee Ed Robertson at the 2014 Bootcamp, and was pleased with the results, Adams said.
"There's not an institution more in need of innovation right now than healthcare," Robertson said. "That's a core value of Pullman Regional Hospital. It's absolutely great to work for an organization that values innovation, and it could be a model for other organizations to grow employees and nurture an innovative thought process."
The intensive five-day Bootcamp will introduce entrepreneurs to mentors and experts in small business and the focus tracks - which also include Technology and Value-Added Agriculture - with expertise ranging from finance to marketing, patent law to human resources. The involvement of experts in various specialty fields will advance its ability to help entrepreneurs get started.
That's where Adams hopes Pullman Regional Hospital can come in.
"Healthcare innovation in the broader context is more than new technology and instruments," he said. "It's process improvements and a way of connecting. I hope we might get as many as a half-dozen people with thoughts around healthcare innovations."
Healthcare in America is in a state of transformation, Adams said. There is momentum for change in quality, cost, and overall patient experience, he said.
That's part of why PRH established the Center for Learning and Innovation, which aims to provide more cost-effective methods to maintain health, as well as decrease the cost of healthcare in the region. It has specific areas of focus on population health, telemedicine, care coordination, computerized simulation training, patient training and continuing medical education, according to the PRH website.
"We wanted to create a space for our own staff and full-time employees who are dedicated to innovation," Adams said. "It allows them to devote some effort to research and new ways of doing business and new ways to enhance experiences and end outcomes for patients and care providers."
Ultimately, the hospital's goal with the new Center is similar to its goal with the Bootcamp.
"If we want to be different, we can't just tweak around the edges," Adams said. "We've got to fundamentally find ways to redo the process that we're currently using to get a different outcome going forward."
