A new state-of-the-art HydroWorx therapy pool with underwater treadmill is now available at Summit Therapy & Health Services for patients with a doctor’s referral. The pool, which was installed in November, replaces Summit’s aging therapy pool. Thanks to generous donations made by staff and community to Pullman Regional Hospital Foundation’s Annual Giving for Excellence Fund Drive, patients are now receiving rehabilitation benefits from this pool with enhanced features, such as adjustable water levels, variable speed treadmill, and improved safety features including stairs with railings to enter and exit the pool for patients with mobility issues.
Hydrotherapy is proven effective in rehabilitation for patients with arthritis, orthopedic injuries and pregnancy related conditions. The buoyancy of the water provides an unloading of the weight bearing joints of the spine, knee, and hips. It is also an effective exercise therapy for those who cannot tolerate weight bearing exercises.
Post-operative patients can often begin water therapy sooner than on land. Hydrotherapy also promotes healing, increased blood flow and oxygen and increases strength due to the water’s resistance. Adjustable water levels allow patients to progress from non-weight bearing activities to specific levels of partial weight bearing. The treadmill can achieve up to 7.3 mph to provide advanced training for athletes and runners.
